Manga Story Synopsis
The story of "Jujutsu Kaisen" is set in a modern society that appears normal on the surface but is secretly filled with danger. Human fear, hatred, and despair manifest as entities called "Curses", which can only be fought by individuals known as "Jujutsu Sorcerers".
The protagonist, Yuji Itadori, was originally an ordinary high school student with exceptional physical abilities. In an unexpected event, to save his friends, he swallows a sealed Special Grade Cursed Object—the finger of Ryomen Sukuna—and becomes the "vessel" for the most powerful curse in history. This choice forces him to the forefront of the Jujutsu world.
To prevent Sukuna's full resurrection and to utilize Yuji's unique physique, the higher-ups of the Jujutsu world decide to let him live temporarily and enroll him in Tokyo Metropolitan Jujutsu Technical High School. There, Yuji becomes comrades with Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki, and under the guidance of the strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer, Satoru Gojo, he officially steps into the brutal world of Jujutsu.
As the plot progresses, "Jujutsu Kaisen" is not merely a story of热血 (passionate) leveling up but continuously adds weight to its narrative. The characters must make choices between reality and ideals, responsibility and self, and almost every choice comes with an irreversible cost.
Author: Gege Akutami
Gege Akutami is one of the most distinctive manga artists in recent years in Weekly Shōnen Jump. "Jujutsu Kaisen" is his first full-length representative work, propelling him to global recognition.
In terms of creative style, Gege Akutami clearly favors dark fantasy, harsh reality, and non-idealized outcomes. In his world, there is no absolute plot armor for the protagonists, nor simple answers like "effort always leads to success." Characters fail, struggle, and die; this relentless narrative style forms the unique and heavy atmosphere of "Jujutsu Kaisen".
Fans often call him "One-Eyed Cat". The reason is simple—he often uses an avatar of a cat with one eye closed in volume extras and interviews. Akutami's practical explanation is that drawing one eye is easier, and cats are generally likable. This casual attitude aligns with his low-key, reclusive personality.
Some amusing anecdotes cherished by fans add to his relatable image. For example, early on, he drew female characters with rather sturdy legs. Later, after drawing a welcome board for his brother's wedding, his sister-in-law commented that "real legs aren't that thick," making him aware of the issue and gradually adjust his art style.
Regarding character preferences, he has publicly stated that his favorite character is Kento Nanami, while he feels "a bit annoyed" by the extremely popular Satoru Gojo, a contrast that amuses many fans.
Main Arc Summaries (Manga + Anime Adaptation)
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Prequel): Chapters 0–4
This is the prequel story before the main series, focusing on Yuta Okkotsu. It tells how he enters the Jujutsu world due to the curse of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto. The story revolves around the "Night Parade of a Hundred Demons" incident, showcasing Special Grade Curses and Sorcerers, and establishes the root of the conflict between Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. It provides essential background for understanding the main plot.
This content has been fully adapted into the animated film "Jujutsu Kaisen 0".
